So you think you want to start a home based business? Or, maybe you're in the early stages of your entrepreneurial venture and are having some second thoughts! Welcome to the real world challenges of home based business.

When you start your hunt for books on starting and running a home based business there is no lacking of materials on the bookstore and library shelves. But, there is one topic that is often lacking in these books, or too lightly touched upon. They often don't openly discuss the psychological part of starting and running a home based business. All too often, people go into business for themselves and discover that they, in fact, are the worst boss they have ever had.

This is not to say that just because you might end up being a bad boss that you shouldn't start a business. But, knowing the personal challenges you have to deal with in a home based business will certainly give you the opportunity to better deal with them and have a better chance for success.

In her book A View From The Tub Millie Szerman has put an emphasis on the importance of the "personal issues" of running a home based business. Not that Ms. Szerman doesn't spend time dealing with many of the general "how to" issues of business, but the first 55 pages of A View From The Tub are pretty much dedicated to helping you decide if you have the right stuff to be a home base business entrepreneur.

In these important first sections, Szerman covers such topics as dealing with the home atmosphere in a business and being able to let the dirty dishes sit in the sink while you make phone calls to your clients. Or, dealing with the next door neighbor who knows you work from home and thinks that it's just great … and by the way can you accept that UPS package coming in for them.

Beyond this "attitude" section of A View From The Tub you'll find lots of helpful information for things like:

  • Setting up your home office
  • Setting your hours of operation
  • Working with city and state regulations
  • Calculating your needed finances
  • Determining if you are making a profit
  • Keeping organized
  • Evaluating your business and moving the business forward

A View From The Tub is an easy read with good street savvy information. What makes this book even more realistic is how Szerman has peppered real life examples throughout the book along with check lists to help you keep organized and on track.

Whether you have a new home-based business or an established one, this well-written book offers solid information on whether or not you have the right personality to run a home-based business along with dealing with all those nitty-gritty details that will help you grow your business.
